Took my kids here for dim sum on a Sunday. We had high hopes when we arrived; many reviewers mentioned that this is their favorite dim sum place in the Triangle; also when we arrived it was packed and we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. We chose about 10 plates which included different dumplings (fried and steamed), pork steamed buns, stuffed crab claws, taro crescents, and shrimp noodle rolls.
Pros: We loved choosing our plates from the carts! Although we have our favorites, it's nice to see other things to try. They have an awesome selection of plates. The servers were friendly and we were able to ask for items that their carts didn't have. They have a paper menu where you can see what they offer and the prices are listed. The dessert plates were delicious! We especially liked the coconut pudding and the egg tarts. Most of the plates tasted hot and fresh. The shrimp filled fried tofu was so tasty, especially the sauce. Excellent taro crescents - my daughter's favorite. I loved the calamari - perfectly seasoned and crispy! They have the best green tea. I mention this bc I'm a huge tea drinker but I usually hate tea that I get from most Chinese restaurants bc it's often bitter. This was not the case here. It had a nice smooth taste.
Cons: We did not like the steamed shrimp dumplings. They were too dense. The fried pork dumplings didn't have enough filling in them. I ate most of mine bf I got to the filling. A couple of the steamed dishes were lukewarm, so I am not sure how fresh they were.
If I were in the area, I would consider returning here. The prices per plate were reasonable, service was good. Maybe I'm being too picky - I'm used to West Coast dim sum. -

Been here ~3 times and I can conclude that this is a decent dim sum place, but definitely not comparable to the ones you will find in big cities. Firstly, they do not have some of the regular items that you normally expect, especially soup dumplings.
Most of the food are decent. Although things like eggplant, stuffed tofu, and other things that seems to be in some brown sauce all are flavored by that same brown sauce. This makes many dishes tasting the same.
However, this place seems to have some inconsistency issue. First, depends on where you sit, you will get totally different experience. Please avoid the side room because the cart never comes to you. Also, the dishes have some inconveniences too. I used to really like the stuffed jalapeno because they got a nice kick and not too saucy. Recently when I tried it again, it was bland and the opposite of the good experience I had.
Overall, it's okay and Durham can use more dim sum options. -

Really glad to have found an authentic dimsum place. The jalapeño with shrimp is my favorite to get & it's delicious here! I love how you can actually see the whole pieces of shrimp (some places mix too much flour into their paste). Yes, some of the ladies might be pushy when it comes to offering you different choices but that's just how it is at authentic places. Will definitely come back!

There's no doubt that Hong Kong has the best dim sum in the RTP area. Every time I have an itch for dim sum, this is my top choice. The only issue is that it's quite far from my active area. That makes every trip here a deliberate plan. Steamed pork ribs with black beans, chicken feet, shrimp dumplings are very authentic and flavorful. I always plan to visit as soon as they open on weekends or during the week days to avoid the crazy crowd of endless line here. Hopefully you don't have to wait too long. Decor is dated but it doesn't impact the good food they serve. I hope you find your favorite. My favorite aside from the above mentioned are eggplant with shrimp, turnip pudding, beef stir fried with rice noodles and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. Try them and you'll see what I mean.

The food at Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant is somewhere between mediocre to good. The fried dishes sometimes taste a bit stale. I was disappointed with the Cheungfan as the vermicelli noodle texture was soggy and mushy. Some of the dim sum taste like it could be bought from the frozen aisle at the Asian market. There are some good dishes though but it is pretty hit or miss. The line can be pretty long over the weekend so you probably want to come early.
